Perfect Imperfect Opening Reception

PERFECT IMPERFECT
The Transience of Things
Concept and Curation by Hayley Ferber and Priska Juschka
Exhibition Dates: August 7 – August 28, 2024

OPENING RECEPTION:
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7 | 6 – 8 PM

Co-curated by independent curator Hayley Ferber and Lichtundfire’s gallery director Priska Juschka, the exhibition seeks to widen the concept of carefully curated group exhibition by featuring visual relationships on a numerically larger scale as part of LICHTUNDFIREcuratorial.

Based upon an Open Call, PERFECT IMPERFECT, with works in various media, painting, photography, sculpture, works on paper and mixed media, is inspired by the profound aesthetics of the philosophical practice and world view of the Japanese Wabi-Sabi.

Taken from the Japanese words wabi, which translates to less is more, and sabi, which means attentive melancholy, Wabi-Sabi refers to an awareness of the transient nature of all things and to a corresponding pleasure in all that bears the mark of impermanence.

This exhibition explores the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete – moving beyond the conventional idea of the pursuit of perfection and into the realm of a deliberate aesthetic and artistic decision of leaving a work, its composition, medium, materials, surface a.o. in a way that is considered not entirely fully executed, finished, polished, smooth or otherwise completed to perfection.

Wish You Were Here: The Second Best Time Is Now 2024 Annual Postcard Show

June 28 – July 28, 2024

Opening reception: Friday, June 28, from 5–7pm

A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to present Wish You Were Here: The Second Best Time Is Now, the 2024 edition of its annual Postcard Show. Each year, hundreds of artists come together to support A.I.R. by donating a postcard-sized work in any medium. Each original work is sold for $45 and all proceeds go to benefit A.I.R. and its mission to advance the work of women and non-binary artists. This year’s exhibition theme focuses on the climate crisis. The exhibition borrows its title from a Chinese Proverb: “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.”

Climate activists are pursuing transformational change with a clear and urgent message: act now to protect people and save our planet from the worst impacts of the climate crisis. Addressing the environmental crisis requires collaboration, creativity, and positive solutions on the part of citizens working in other fields, including artists.

Artists’ activism has taken many forms, from posters and demonstrations to radical actions and fundraising. Many of the postcards in the exhibition explore the intersection of gender and the environment. As Katherine Wilkinson writes in The New York Times, “Climate change is a collective problem but its burdens—displacement, homelessness, poverty, sexual violence, disease—weigh more heavily on women and girls.”

Participating Artists: Tomoko Abe, Victoria Alexander, Liz Almonte, Micaela Amateau Amato, Diana Antohe, Julia Arbex, Leslie Atkins, Eric Aubertin, Parker Balog, Teresa Barbera, Luisa Basnuevo, Crystal Benitez, Stephanie Bernheim, Taylor Bielecki, Meg Boe Birns, Alison Borrero, Daniel C. All Who Wander

All Who Wander

May 18, 2024 - August 17, 2024

Citizens of the globe are in motion – leaving, coming, going, staying.

“All Who Wander” is Rockaway Artists Alliance’s Summer 2024 Exhibition juried by Eto Otitigbe, Assistant Professor of Sculpture in the Art Department at Brooklyn College (etootitigbe.com). The artwork on display in the gallery responds both literally and in the abstract to a comprehensive notion of travel and human movement.

“Not all who wander are lost,” but perhaps some are. So much of one’s life can be defined by how and why we went from Point A to Point B – and everywhere in between. From youthful road trips on shoestring budgets, to stressful business trips that leave us wondering ‘Is this what I worked so hard for?’ Destination weddings, gap years, second honeymoons, hiking the Appalachian trail – documented in social media feeds by the likes of experienced elders and those just starting out. Flights leaving behind cartels and war, migrations, refugees, the search for desperately needed gallons of water stashed in the shade of saguaros.

Through widely varied circumstances – survival, exploration, healing a broken heart, starting over, having the privilege of being able to take a break, and more – we relocate ourselves physically and often spin our nternal axis permanently.

Beyond the Veil

Brooklyn Art Haus, 24 Marcy Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211

Opening Reception Sunday, 12/10, 5-7pm

Curated by Audra Verona Lambert

Artists:  Julia Sinelnikova, Kristin Reed, Esperanza Cortes, Andrea Bartine Caldarise, Shannon Carroll, Donna Cleary, Marina Gutierrez, Hayley Ferber, Lauren Murao Walkiewicz, Fiona Aboud, Sato Yamamoto, and Pavlina Vagioni

Expanding the boundaries of mysticism and the unknown, 'Beyond the Veil' traipses the borders between the real and ethereal, tangible and esoteric knowledge. Ranging from photography to mixed media, painting and installation work, works on view speculate on the impact of magical realms. Portals to magic can be found within our natural environments, through windows, parallel dimensions, and outer space. Taking a global perspective on how the mystical is interpreted and the meaning of magic - as an applied form of healing to a meditative means of tapping into greater powers beyond our comprehension - “Beyond the Veil” gives that which lies beyond our comprehension to speak through each artists’ own interpretive process.

An Exhibition Celebrating Women and Non-Binary Artists at Compere Collective

Compere Collective, a woman-operated gallery space located in the vibrant neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn, is excited to announce the opening of its latest show: "Good On Paper". This exhibition will showcase the distinct and innovative talents of eight local women and non-binary artists whose works express the versatility and dynamism of paper-based mediums.

Artists include: Catalina Toro, Ellen Niz, Hayley Ferber, Judith Ornstein, Jocelyn Benford, Catalina Escallon, Nocturnal, and Alexandra Jamieson.

The exhibition will feature an eclectic range of works, from intricate cardboard constructions and collages, to delicately altered books and bold, layered watercolors. To Darken, Lightly: a Juried LIC-A Exhibition

Curated by Audra Lambert

Opening Reception: July 26, 5-8pm

The LIC-A Art Space @ The Factory LIC

30-30 37th Ave, LIC NY 11101

“They slept on the abyss without a surge—

The waves were dead; the tides were in their grave,

The moon, their mistress, had expir'd before;

The winds were wither'd in the stagnant air,

And the clouds perish'd; Darkness had no need

Of aid from them—She was the Universe.” (George Gordon Lord Byron, “Darkness”)

The interspersion of light and darkness can hold many meanings for people according to their identity/ies, and can even be interpreted according to more temporary states such as mood or major life events. When considering how light and darkness reveal the world to us so differently when applied to representation or abstract artworks, it can be easy to forget that these two seeming dualities depend on one another: and are, in fact, shifts of light along the same unified spectrum. By keeping in mind that the two exist in harmony, rather than in conflict, we can grasp the ways that they manifest in art, in culture - and in life.
